It is with the aim of generating proposals for fostering strong multilateral regimes on trade and climate change and promoting transition to a low-carbon economy and a sustainable energy future that ICTSD, the World Trade Organization (WTO) and the Department of Trade and Industry of the Republic of South Africa (the dti) are convening this Symposium, to take place on 5 and 6 December 2011 in parallel to the United Nations Conference on Climate Change (UNFCCC) COP 17/CMP 7 in Durban, South Africa.

It is with the aim of generating proposals for fostering strong multilateral regimes on trade and climate change and promoting transition to a low-carbon economy and a sustainable energy future that ICTSD convened the symposium on The Role of Trade and Markets in Addressing Climate Change and Sustainable Development, that took place on 8 and 9 December 2010 in parallel to the 16th Conference of the Parties (COP16) of the United Nations Conference on Climate Change (UNFCCC).
Leveraging multilateral trade to address climate interface

This event showcased an array of trade and climate linkages focusing on how trade can enable progress on climate mitigation and adaptation. Topics included: intellectual property; climate friendly goods; addressing poverty and building resilience; agriculture; carbon-labeling and competitiveness.
Patents, technological knowledge and access to climate change mitigation technologies

UNEP, EPO and ICTSD carried out a study on patents and clean energy technologies. The panel will discuss how practical tools derived from this study can contribute to a better understanding of IPR options in the UNFCCC negotiations. The panel will also consider relevant future areas of research.
