Paul Walakira

Standards Officer at the Uganda National Bureau of Standards

 

 

Paul Walakira holds a Masters degree in Environment and Natural Resources with over  8 years experience in Standardization and training. He is currently working with the Uganda National Bureau of Standards (UNBS) as a Standards Officer. He  manages the technical committee on Chemicals and  Environment  at  UNBS, a committee  in charge of  developing national standards  on  Chemicals and  Environmental   Management.  His  portfolio includes  but not limited to: carrying out research and analyzing data  for the purposes  of  generating  information   required   for  Standards   development including making technical presentations, assessment of quality and completeness of new work items proposals submitted by various stakeholders, and representing UNBS  in various fora  on matters related to standards  development and implementation. He  has personally worked on several national  standardization projects for industrial products as well  as projects on environmental  standards.  He   is the  current  secretary of  the national  mirror  committee of  ISO/TC  207  and  for  the  time being he  is participating  in  the  work of  the  new international   standard for  Carbon footprint  of  products.  Paul is a  member of  the East African  Community (EAC) steering committee which coordinates the implementation of the EAC project on “promotion of climate related trade within EAC through standardization”. He is also participating in ISO/PC 248 work on sustainability criteria for bio-energy.  Prior to joining the  UNBS   standards department, Paul worked as an Analyst in UNBS  Chemistry Laboratory for 5 years. He  is also a part  time  Lecturer  with Kyambogo University, one of the leading  national   Universities  in   Uganda,  where  he  teaches   Analytical Chemistry and Environmental Impact assessment.
